Remove switch - Electric column adjust

Care Point:
The following steps apply to vehicles fitted with an electric steering column and must be completed before the MRM removal.
If the vehicle is not fitted with an electric steering column, proceed to Remove MRM below.

1.
Fully extend the steering column.

2.
Unclip and remove the switch surround (1) from the switch - Electric column adjust.

Care Point:
Risk of component damage.

3.
Remove the screws (2) (3x8) 1 Nm

4.
Pull out the switch (3) and disconnect the electrical connector.

5.
Remove the switch (3).

Remove MRM

Care Point:
Risk of component damage.
If the MRM is not being replaced do not rotate MRM once the steering wheel is removed.

1.
Apply tape across the MRM at point (3) to prevent rotation.

Care Point:
When you loosen the bolt a noise will be heard. Do not rotate the bolt past the point of no noise or damage may occur.

2.
Loosen the bolt (2) (3mm Hex) 2 Nm through the opening below the MRM.

3.
Pull the MRM in the direction shown to expose the gaiter at the rear.

4.
Unclip and remove the gaiter from the MRM.

5.
Disconnect the electrical connector from the MRM.

6.
Remove the MRM (1).

Install MRM

Care Point:
Make sure the locking pin / tape is fitted to keep the clock spring face at 0° or damage may occur.
Make sure the steering column spline does not excessively strike the MRM internals during fitment.
Do not use excessive force to locate the MRM into the correct position.
Remove the clock spring sticker and any sticker residue at the bottom of the MRM.
Minimise the time between removal of the locking pin / tape and installation of the steering wheel.

1.
Install the MRM but do not fully tighten.

Care Point:
Make sure to engage the electrical connectors and the 2 clock spring drive pegs.
Do not allow the MRM to rotate after removing the locking pin / tape.

2.
Remove the locking pin / tape from the MRM.

3.
Install the steering wheel.

Care Point:
Make sure the airbag leads are pulled though the steering wheel correctly and are not damaged.

4.
When the steering wheel is installed, turn it fully clockwise, then fully counterclockwise 3-4 times then return to 0° position (wheels straight ahead).

Care Point:
Make sure the MRM bolt torque is obeyed. Excessive torque may damage the MRM clamp.
Make sure there is no grating noise when rotating the steering wheel.
Make sure that all fitted stalks operate correctly.

5.
Confirm that there is no noise from the MRM and all stalks are functional. This step needs to be done with the engine on.

6.
If there is any noise from the MRM or the stalks do not function correctly adjust the position of the MRM and repeat step 4.

7.
Tighten the MRM bolt (2). (3mm Hex) 2 Nm

Install Switch - Electric column adjust

Care Point:
The Switch surround of the Switch - Electric column adjust has an alignment location detent on its inner face. Make sure this is correctly positioned before installation.

1.
Install the components in reverse order.

Care Point:
Make sure the Vehicle Communication Interface (VCI), McLaren Diagnostic System (MDS) and vehicle 12V batteries are in good condition or connected to an external power supply.

2.
Connect MDS to the vehicle.

3.
Proceed to Diagnostic Toolbox.

4.
Select Steering Angle Sensor (SAS).

5.
Access Reprogramming.

6.
Check if a software update is available, update as required.

7.
Access Sequences.

8.
Do the Fine Tune Zero Position sequence.

9.
Read out and clear the error memory.
