Instructions
Interior / Interior Restraints / Interior Restraints - Service Procedures / MSD-N-001 - Deploy Passenger Airbag
CAUTION!

If an airbag or emergency tensioning retractor unit is triggered accidentally or if an airbag unit is stored with its deployment side face down flying objects can cause injury.
Always store removed airbag units with the deployment side face up.
Acquisition, transportation, storage, testing and assembly work should only be performed or supervised by properly trained personnel.
Install airbag or emergency tensioning retractor units immediately after taking them from the storage room.
Airbag and emergency tensioning retractor units must be protected from flying sparks, open flames and temperatures of > 100°C.
Do not transport airbag or emergency tensioning retractor units in the passenger compartment; store in original replacement part packaging only and secure tightly in the load compartment of the vehicle.
Do not let airbag and emergency tensioning retractor units come into contact with grease, oil or cleaning agents.
Perform system test only with approved testing units in the installed state and with vehicle unoccupied.
Initial hookup of the battery or an external power supply may only be done when the ignition is switched on and the vehicle is unoccupied.
Airbags and emergency tensioning retractor units that have dropped from a height of more than 0.5 m must be replaced.
Keep at a safety distance of at least 10 meters if scrapping air bags or emergency tensioning retractor units by controlled ignition.
Take the following steps before performing body work or retrofitting operations, working on air or emergency tensioning retractor units, or working on components connected to airbag or emergency tensioning retractor unit circuitry (e.g. removal of the steering wheel):
Remove ignition key
Disconnect and insulate the battery ground cable.
Disconnect any external power sources (e. g. chargers).
Pull plug from control unit prior to performing work inside the passenger compartment and prior to any welding work.

Deploy Airbag

Care Point:
Personal protective equipment (PPE) must be used. (Goggles, gloves, mask and ear defenders).

Care Point:
The airbags fitted are ‘two stage’.

Care Point:
Make sure the positioning of the airbag allows the airbag to deploy freely avoiding any projection (bag facing upwards).

Care Point:
Do not store items on top of the airbag.

Care Point:
The airbag is active when removed from the vehicle.

1.
Equipment necessary to deploy the airbag:

2.
Fully charged 12 volt battery (A).

3.
McLaren recommended deployment tool (B). Deployment Tool - Airbag

4.
Deployment intermediate wiring harness ©). Intermediate Harness Deployment Tool

5.
Airbag deployment wiring harness (D). Passenger Airbag Deployment Harness Tool

6.
Pallet (E).

Care Point:
Five used tyres if smaller than 19 inches diameter (F).

7.
Four used tyres of 19 inches diameter or larger.

8.
Ratchet strap/rope (G).

9.
Cover (H).

Care Point:
Make sure the airbag is deployed outside in a safe area.

Care Point:
Notify all persons in the vicinity that an airbag is being deployed.

Care Point:
Keep all persons away from the deployment area.

10.
Put the tyres on the pallet.

Care Point:
The airbag deployment harness has two connectors, make sure both connectors are connected to the airbag.

Care Point:
Make sure the wiring harness is connected blue wire to blue wire and brown wire to brown wire.

11.
Install the airbag deployment wiring harness (1) and the intermediate wiring harness (2) to the airbag.

12.
Put the airbag in the tyres.

Care Point:
Make sure the wiring harness is connected blue wire to blue wire and brown wire to brown wire.

13.
Install the cover and the remaining tyre.

14.
Use the ratchet strap/rope and secure the tyres to the pallet.

15.
Connect the deployment tool to the intermediate wiring harness (3).

Care Point:
Make sure the deployment tool is a minimum of 15 metres away from the deployment area.

16.
Connect the deployment tool to the 12 volt battery, the button (T1) will now be illuminated green.

17.
Push the button (T1). The light will now go out.

18.
The button (T2) will now be illuminated green (this shows the secondary circuit is now ready).

19.
To deploy the airbag, push (T1) & (T2) buttons at the same time.

Care Point:
Put on PPE when returning to a deployed airbag.

Care Point:
If airbag powder comes in contact with skin, wash immediately with water.

20.
When the airbag has been deployed wait for a minimum of 10 minutes before handling.

21.
Dispose of the airbag.
