Instructions
Interior / Interior Restraints / Interior Restraints - Service Procedures / DA-RM-08N002-00-001 - Deploy airbag - Out of vehicle
CAUTION!

If an airbag or emergency tensioning retractor unit is triggered accidentally or if an airbag unit is stored with its deployment side face down flying objects can cause injury.
Always store removed airbag units with the deployment side face up.
Acquisition, transportation, storage, testing and assembly work should only be performed or supervised by properly trained personnel.
Install airbag or emergency tensioning retractor units immediately after taking them from the storage room.
Airbag and emergency tensioning retractor units must be protected from flying sparks, open flames and temperatures of > 100°C.
Do not transport airbag or emergency tensioning retractor units in the passenger compartment; store in original replacement part packaging only and secure tightly in the load compartment of the vehicle.
Do not let airbag and emergency tensioning retractor units come into contact with grease, oil or cleaning agents.
Perform system test only with approved testing units in the installed state and with vehicle unoccupied.
Initial hookup of the battery or an external power supply may only be done when the ignition is switched on and the vehicle is unoccupied.
Airbags and emergency tensioning retractor units that have dropped from a height of more than 0.5 m must be replaced.
Keep at a safety distance of at least 10 meters if scrapping air bags or emergency tensioning retractor units by controlled ignition.
Take the following steps before performing body work or retrofitting operations, working on air or emergency tensioning retractor units, or working on components connected to airbag or emergency tensioning retractor unit circuitry (e.g. removal of the steering wheel):
Remove ignition key
Disconnect and insulate the battery ground cable.
Disconnect any external power sources (e. g. chargers).
Pull plug from control unit prior to performing work inside the passenger compartment and prior to any welding work.

Deploy airbag

Care Point:
Wear relevant personal protective equipment (Goggles, gloves, mask and ear defenders).

Care Point:
The airbags fitted to this vehicle are ‘two stage’.

Care Point:
Always deploy/store airbag with cover plate on the bottom facing downward (Trim face on top).

Care Point:
Do not store items on top of the airbag.

Care Point:
Always assume the airbag is active, even when removed from vehicle.

Care Point:
Make sure airbag has been following deployed before it is disposed.

Care Point:
Keep airbag away from sources of heat during storage.

Care Point:
Keep airbag away from liquids during storage.

Care Point:
Connect one end of the harness together to prevent an unexpected deployment.

1.
Make sure battery is disconnected for a minimum 15 minutes to allow for sufficient system discharge.

Care Point:
Place airbag in well ventilated area, or in secure cage/ container to prevent injury.

2.
Use a suitable deployment harness.

Care Point:
Make sure the airbag is deployed in a safe area away from people (approximately 30 ft).

3.
Connect airbag to deployment harness.

4.
Notify all personnel in the vicinity that an airbag deployment is about to be carried out.

Care Point:
Make sure both stages have been deployed.

5.
Detach other end of deployment harness.

Care Point:
Wear relevant personal protective equipment (Goggles, gloves, mask and ear defenders).

Care Point:
Allow module cool down sufficiently before handling.

Care Point:
If airbag powder comes into contact with skin, wash immediately with water.

6.
Apply harness to 12V battery to deploy airbag.

7.
Dispose of module.
